Woongoolba: Where Coastal Charm Meets Bushland Serenity!
G’day! Welcome to the ripper coastal haven of Woongoolba, a rural gem tucked away in the northern part of the City of Gold Coast, Queensland. With a population of 280 in the 2016 census, this place is all about the true blue Aussie spirit.
Geography:
Woongoolba is where the Aussie bush meets the sea. Bounded by the Logan River up north and Moreton Bay to the northeast, we’ve got coastal living at its finest. Little Rocky Point, a top notch headland jutting into Moreton Bay, is a local gem. The land here is low lying, with a few spots rising to about 20 metres, giving us cracking views and breezy vibes.
History:
Back in the late 1800s, this farming district, known as Pimpama Island, was a real beaut. It covered the ground between the Pimpama River and the Logan River, including Woongoolba. The place was called an island because of lagoons and swamps, perfect for growing sugar cane. The name Woongoolba itself is believed to be an Aboriginal nod to the geebung tree.
Our forebears, mainly German immigrants, settled here between 1864 and 1900, making Woongoolba a fair dinkum community. We’ve got a piece of history in the form of the Pimpama Island State School, now Woongoolba State School, which opened its doors back in 1876.
The iconic Rocky Point Sugar Mill, established in 1878 by Carl Heinrich Heck, still stands tall. Despite being one of the oldest sugar mills in Oz, it’s still privately owned by the Heck Group. Our roots run deep with the first Bethlehem Lutheran church built in 1882.
Recent History and Challenges:
Fast forward to 2016, and we faced a hiccup in our prawn industry with the white spot virus outbreak. Imported prawns and some fishy business in the Logan River stirred the pot. In 2021, legal battles ensued, and we’re making a fair dinkum effort to tighten biosecurity to keep our Aussie prawns in top notch condition.
In the spirit of preserving history, the Heck family homestead “Friedensheim” found a new home at the Beenleigh Historical Village in 2019. After a bit of elbow grease, it officially reopened in November 2021, reminding us of our sugar mill roots.
Education:
Our little tackers have Woongoolba State School, a government primary school, to kickstart their Aussie journey. For the big guns, Ormeau Woods State High School and Beenleigh State High School are just a bushwhack away.
Amenities:
We’re not just about history; we’ve got modern amenities too. The Gold Coast City Council rolls in with a mobile library fortnightly at Woongoolba State School. The Bethlehem Lutheran Church and the Woongoolba Public Hall (aka Pimpama Island & Districts Community Centre) are true-blue community hubs.
And don’t miss Cecil Zipf Park at Little Rocky Point. With beachside BBQs, off-leash dog areas and primo fishing spots, it’s a ripper of a place to soak in the coastal vibes.
